The Arizona Department of Transportation Board of Directors approved the construction and expansion of Cesar Chavez Boulevard in San Luis on Dec. 23, awarding the project to DPE Construction with work set to begin in early 2026.
The project is significant for San Luis as it aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance roadway safety along one of the city’s main corridors. The investment exceeds $65 million and includes reconstructing Cesar Chavez Boulevard into a four-lane divided roadway, upgrading intersections with new signals, lighting, signage, drainage improvements, and constructing a one-lane roundabout at the intersection with Escondido and San Luis Plaza Drive.
Mayor Nieves Riedel said, “This is a major win for San Luis. This is a testament to the dedication of former and current council members, city staff, and the entire regional team who stayed committed over the years to make this long-awaited project a reality.”
