Arizona Western College welcomed more than 70 fifth-grade students from James B. Rolle Elementary School to its Yuma Campus as part of the semi-annual I’m Going to College event on March 5.
The event aims to inspire young students to think about higher education by providing them with a firsthand college experience. Participants took part in a mock new student orientation and attended three mini classes taught by faculty members from Arizona Western College and partner state universities. Professors volunteered their time to deliver 25-minute lessons, giving elementary students an introduction to various academic subjects in a real college classroom setting.
After attending classes, the students had lunch on campus and participated in an achievement ceremony. Each student received an “I’m Going to College” T-shirt featuring the year they are expected to complete their bachelor’s degree (2037).
Arizona Western College has been inviting elementary-age students for these events since 2010, aiming to foster a culture of higher education within the community. Since its inception, more than 3,150 local students have taken part in the program. The spring and fall editions of I’m Going to College are partially funded by the Burton Family Foundation.
