Arizona State Representative Leo Biasiucci has introduced House Bill 2395, aiming to enhance student fitness and improve transparency for families in the state. The bill proposes the establishment of the Arizona School Fitness Program within the Arizona Department of Education. This initiative would recognize public schools that voluntarily engage in nationally recognized physical fitness tests or events.
Schools participating in this program can include a fitness program designation on their annual report cards, providing parents with additional information when selecting educational options for their children. Importantly, HB 2395 does not impose any mandates or new requirements; participation is entirely voluntary, allowing schools to choose programs that best suit their students and communities.
Representative Biasiucci said, “Our kids are spending more time on screens and less time moving, and that has real consequences.” He emphasized that the bill offers schools an option to promote fitness while maintaining local decision-making authority. The legislation aligns with the House Republican Majority Plan by supporting families and empowering parents.
Currently, Arizona law mandates physical education for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. However, HB 2395 allows schools prioritizing fitness to communicate these efforts clearly. By recognizing such schools, the bill encourages healthier habits without expanding government control.
The bill received bipartisan support from the House Education Committee and will now proceed to the full Arizona House of Representatives. Biasiucci was elected to represent Legislative District 30 in 2023, succeeding Robert Meza. He also serves as Chairman of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee.
