The City of San Luis Parks and Recreation Department announced on June 11 that new inclusive features will be added to the playground at Joe Orduño Park. The enhancements are designed so that all children, regardless of ability, can play and explore together in a welcoming environment.

The project is described as an important first step toward promoting equity in play for children of all abilities. Inclusive playgrounds are intended to foster community well-being by ensuring every child has access to recreational opportunities.

Funding for the new equipment was secured through donations totaling $58,827.68, with $22,132.27 provided by The Cocopah Indian Tribe and $36,695.41 from Campesinos Sin Fronteras. Parks and Recreation Director Angelica Roldan said, “Every child in San Luis should have the chance to play in a space that is welcoming, inclusive, and fun.” Roldan also said, “Thank you to the generous donations from our community partners, we’re thrilled to take the first step towards inclusive play in our beautiful San Luis.”

The planned additions include an accessible whirl that accommodates up to two wheelchair users along with other children without mobility devices, an accessible swing seat for the current swing set, a double-sided communication board with images and words for non-verbal children or those with developmental differences, and smooth rubber paths connecting all features. These improvements are expected to be completed by August 2025.
