The City of San Luis Parks and Recreation Department held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to mark the opening of new inclusive playground features at Joe Orduño Park. The project, which was realized through collaboration with Campesinos Sin Fronteras Thrive Program, the Cocopah Indian Tribe, and Dave Bang Associates, aims to create a space where children of all abilities can play together.
The upgrades include a bilingual communication board to help nonverbal children communicate their needs and feelings. T-swings were also relocated and now feature accessible rubber surfacing, making them easier to reach. Additionally, an Accessible Whirl has been added.
Angelica Roldan, Director of Parks and Recreation, said: “The main feature of this project is creating a space where all children, regardless of ability, can integrate and play together. Our goal is to continue adding inclusive features to our parks and activities, ensuring that every child in San Luis has a safe space where they can grow, thrive, and be their very best.”
The city says it will continue efforts to make public spaces welcoming for everyone.
