The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are continuing their efforts to protect the public by arresting and deporting violent criminals, despite facing political challenges from some elected officials. Recently, DHS announced the arrest of Anel Billy Irigoyen Portillo, a Mexican national with a federal conviction for importing fentanyl into the United States. Portillo was apprehended in Arizona, aligning with DHS and ICE’s mission to target narcotics traffickers linked to the fentanyl crisis affecting families across the state.
Representative John Gillette criticized Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva for her comments against DHS and ICE operations, suggesting they undermine law enforcement efforts. “While federal agents conduct lawful operations to protect public safety, newly elected Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva has chosen to publicly attack DHS and ICE, portraying enforcement actions as misconduct rather than acknowledging the clear and documented threat posed by violent criminal offenders,” said Gillette.
Gillette emphasized that cooperation between local agencies like those in Pima County and federal law enforcement is crucial for maintaining public safety. He called for an end to political interference in these operations. “DHS and ICE are doing the job the American people expect—removing violent criminals and drug traffickers from our communities,” he said.
John Gillette was elected in 2023 to represent Arizona’s 30th House District, succeeding Christian Solorio. He serves as Chairman of the Federalism, Military Affairs & Elections Committee.
