The Arizona Department of Education is expecting to receive $20 million in federal funds, U.S. Sen. Martha McSally said in a press release from her website.
The federal funding will go toward child literacy for the next five years. McSally requested this funding on May 18, when she sent a letter on behalf of the Arizona Department of Education to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
“The first years of a child’s life are crucial for learning how to read,” McSally said in the press release. “Early childhood literacy programs like those offered through Arizona’s First Things First set our kids and our state up for a prosperous future. I was pleased to help secure this grant on behalf of the Arizona Department of Education.”
The department will receive the funding broken up between each of the five years. Through the U.S. Department of Education's Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant Program, $4 million will be awarded each year for the next five years, according to the press release.
