City of San Luis issued the following announcement on Nov. 17.

The City of San Luis celebrated Geographic Information System (GIS) Day on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, showcasing how geography and the real-world applications of GIS are making a difference in business, government and society.

The City of San Luis, through the Planning and Zoning Department, uses GIS technologies to continuously improve efficiency and increase productivity, thereby enhancing public service. They provide responsive, high-quality municipal GIS support and services to all City Departments, City Officials, and the public.

This November, the City of San Luis joined hundreds of organizations worldwide in celebrating GIS Day by hosting local students from Ed Pastor Elementary School. Students had the opportunity to learn about the real-world applications of GIS, play with an Augmented Reality Sandbox that redraws projected topographic images, and participated in an engaging scavenger hunt around City Hall using GPS Software. Yuma County GIS assisted with the presentation and activities.

“It is important to continue implementing technologies that allows city staff to obtain reliable and accurate data” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “As our city continues to grow and expand, the use of GIS is a crucial technology we must be familiar with and comprehend its benefits and current uses so that we can continue providing quality service to our residents,” he added.
