City of Yuma issued the following announcement on Mar. 10.
On Thursday March 10, 2022, just before 2:00 am, a fire was reported at a home in the 1200 block of 7th Avenue. Yuma Fire Department personnel found light smoke coming from 1215 South 7th Avenue. Firefighters found the fire in the dining area of the home and it was already out. They confirmed the fire had not spread from the area of origin, and ventilated the smoke from the residence.
There had been 2 adults and 3 children home at the time the fire was discovered. One of the adults woke up to hear a popping sound and smelled smoke. The family was able to safely evacuate the home, and one resident used a garden hose to put out the fire. That person was evaluated for smoke inhalation but was not transported. The home was not able to be immediately reoccupied and the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family.
The cause of the fire was believed to be electrical. Special care should always be used involving extension cords, making sure they are not covered or pinched, and use should be limited. The home also had only one smoke alarm and that alarm was not functioning. Most fatal fires happen late at night or early in the morning when people are sleeping. Change batteries annually, test alarms monthly, and replace alarms over 10 years old.
