Mario Miramontes-Rubio, a Mexican national previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter, has been convicted on another charge: re-entry after removal. This was announced in a November 22 post on X by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Yuma Sector Chief.

According to the Chief Patrol Agent for the CBP Yuma Sector, "A felon whose arrest was posted on our social media pages in May was convicted of reentry after removal and sentenced to 24 months behind bars. Mario Miramontes Rubio, a 51-year-old Mexican national, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 21 years in prison," the agent wrote.

In May, the CBP announced via the Yuma Sector’s Facebook page that Miramontes-Rubio had been apprehended. The announcement said, "Yuma Sector camera operators identified an attempted smuggling event in progress and agents intercepted the vehicle and tracked three subjects who fled the area. They arrested the 19-year-old U.S. citizen driver and six Mexican nationals, two of whom were convicted felons." The post further detailed that "Mario Miramontes Rubio, 51, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in California and sentenced to 21 years in prison. Marco Lopez Gutierrez, 38, was convicted of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 in California and sentenced to six years prison. Both had prior removals and they will be prosecuted for reentry after removal to face additional time behind bars."

The Yuma sector spans a significant portion of desert between California and Arizona as described on CBP's webpage dedicated to it. It includes 126 miles of the U.S. border stretching from the Imperial Sand Dunes to the Yuma-Pima County Line. Over the last two decades since its establishment in 2004, this sector has doubled in size.

The U.S. Border Patrol operates under the Department of Homeland Security with a mandate to safeguard national borders against illegal entry of people and contraband. Since its inception in 1924, it has operated across 328 ports of entry while protecting approximately 7,000 miles of land borders along with an extensive network of maritime borders totaling around 95,000 miles.
