The La Paz County Sheriff's Office has drawn considerable attention with five candidates filing for the position in the upcoming election.
There will be a Republican primary Aug. 4 with incumbent Sheriff Bill Risen seeking reelection to a second term. Among the primary opponents is Quartzsite Police Chief William Ponce, who has also served as the police chief for the Colorado River Indian Tribes.
Frank Vidrine is the other Republican opponent. Risen defeated Vidrine, who was running as a Democrat in the 2016 election. Vidrine said he has changed parties to better reflect his views, Parker Pioneer reported. Vidrine’s law enforcement experience comes as a deputy with the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office.
The winner of the primary will advance to the general election on Nov. 3 against a field that includes a Democrat Felipe “Phillip” Rodriguez and independent Michael Roth. Parker Pioneer reported Roth has been a vocal opponent of law enforcement in his past.
